This week we’ve got a slightly different review for you on SmartTechStuff. We’re taking a look at a brilliant little smart kitchen gadget in the form of the Click and Grow Garden (Available on Amazon UK). Now at version 3, this indoor ‘grow your own herb’ planter is a clever way to get fresh herbs without the fuss. But is it any good?

What on earth is the click and grow garden?

This is a user-friendly planter that grows tasty herbs, flowers or veg in your kitchen and takes care of all the watering, feeding and lighting ‘feeding’ for you. It’s as lazy as it sounds. It holds enough water for at least a month, so there’s no pressure to water your plants each day.

Take the growing kit out the box, insert a seed ‘pod’, fill the water tank and the kit will grow the herb or other plant of your choice. No soil, no mess. Apart from waiting a bit, all you have to do is harvest your lovely new herbs and you’re done.

It can grow three plants at a time and there’s a bewildering amount of possible plants you can grow so you’ll never be stuck for something to try.

Why grow your own herbs & plants with Smart Garden?

If you love to cook, then you’ll already know how much better ‘fresh’ herbs taste compared to those sad-looking dried ones you get at the supermarket in the little jars. Not only that, they h

But it can be hard to get really fresh ones, and especially hard to get organic fresh herbs.

Everything you grow in your Amazon herb garden will be 100% pesticide free and as fresh as can be. Plus you’ll get a glowing sense of pride that you grew those lovely herbs yourself. Like the AeroGarden, you get everything you need in the box.

How to set up your DIY smart garden

What if you want to use your own seeds?

If you want to have total freedom over what you grow and have some seeds you want to grow in your herb garden then that’s easy to do.

You’ll need to order something called the ‘Experimental Pods‘ for the smart garden, which will let you add your own seeds. It contains the ‘smart soil’ that you can plant pretty much anything in. The rest of the process is identical. The smart garden will take care of the rest.

There is another hydroponics garden that lets you plant your own seeds. Check out our Idoo Indoor garden review – this is a similar kit where you can grow the plant from any seed you have.

What are these plant ‘pods’ that the herb garden uses

One of the best things about this click and grow indoor garden is that you don’t have to be a gardening buff to get consistent results every time. There’s no worrying about how many seeds to put in, solid or any of that.

A pod contains everything you need to grow the plant, most importantly the seeds themselves. Just pick from one of 50 pods, put it in your tray and the smart garden does the rest. If it sounds really easy it is.

The Smart Garden is capable of growing 3 main types of plants:

  1. Salad greens and things like tomatoes
  2. A wide range of herbs
  3. Flowers

The range of herbs and plants includes all the favorites you’re already using like:

  • Rosemary
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Marjoram
  • Thyme
  • Mint

A three-pack of the pods will generally set you back just under a tenner, so it’s pretty cheap to refill and go again. There’s lots of stuff you can try growing and your friends will definitely be impressed when you tell them you’ve grown your own herbs!

you’ll definitely appreciate the simplicity of the click and grow herb garden.

Is the click and grow herb garden REALLY silent though?

Your smart kitchen should be an oasis of quiet and calm, a retreat from the day’s stresses and strains – a place you can relax and cook something fabulous. The last thing you want is a constant noisy whirring that some indoor smart gardens create.

One of the benefits to the Smart Garden products is that they are completely silent. It will sit happily on and shelf or window sill, quietly growing your new crop.

How hard is it to grow your own herbs, flowers and plants?

Growing your own herbs indoors, at home, might sound easy but it’s traditionally been a bit of a nerdy thing to do, with the need to get the pH balance just right, along with complex other stuff to take care of. Nobody has time for that! If you’re looking for something you can just stick on your windowsill or countertop and not have to stress over it, you’ll definitely appreciate the simplicity of the click and grow herb garden.

There’s literally nothing to do but wait patiently and watch your masterpieces grow every day. You get everything you need in the starter kit and they’re ready to ‘grow’ out of the box.

And one of the best things about having your own herb garden is that you’re not tied to any season. Want to grow tomatoes in the winter? No problem.

Super-lazy plant growing using hydroponics

When you tell your dinner guests you’ve grown the herbs yourself using hydroponics, they’ll probably think you’re a secret genius. Little will they know all there is to it with the click and grow herb garden is bunging the pod into the garden and leaving it to grow. With a lot of other kits you have to periodically add nutrients but the Smart garden takes care of all that and will even water itself.

Conclusion: should you buy the click and grow garden?

The click and grow garden is a fascinating product that is as interesting to use and watch as it is practical. It’s not a gimmick where you get to watch something grow, it’s a genuinely useful way to grow your own vegetables and herbs, along with some beautiful plants you can use as gifts, or decorate the home. It’s fun. It’s useful and we love it.

Highly recommended!
